Pa Ranjith is one of those few in the Tamil film industry who have held their ground as both a director and producer in equal measure. He has directed and produced many films in his career. The most recent one that he bankrolled under his production banner Neelam Productions is Blue Star. The film Blue Star stars Ashok Selvan and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj. The duo team up for this caste-distinction based film. Set in the 1990s, the film is based in Arakkonam and follows the rivalry between two groups belonging to different castes against the backdrop of cricket. The film, directed by S Jayakumar, which released on January 25 and got a good response, had its successful meet held recently in Chennai. On this occasion, producer Pa Ranjith addressed the audience and said that the Censor Board wanted them to change a few names in the film as they were related to different castes. He said that people with alternative opinions wanted the film to not be released, but Blue Star emphasises equality.

He also said that the Censor Board knew what to expect when a film made by Neelam Productions was sent to them for clearance and certification. Pa Ranjith also said that people pay close attention to the politics that he depicts in his films and it is the politics that he talks about that draws people to his films.

Pa Ranjith is now gearing up for his next directorial titled Thangalaan that stars Chiyaan Vikram. It is a period piece set during the British colonial era. It narrates the tale of the titular character played by Vikram, who goes on a valiant struggle against the British after they try to seize his land.
