Amidst thunderous applause, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced that the financial assistance under the TN Advocates’ Welfare Fund will go up from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5.25 lakh. She got a standing ovation from the audience — mostly advocates — when she said this assistance would have no service period cap in the event of death of an advocate.

In other words, the family of an advocate who just joined the Bar but suffered a fatal accident, would get Rs 5.25 lakh from the welfare fund. The hike was a long pending demand of the advocates, but they had sought just Rs 5 lakh. What they got was over and above expectation. Jayalalithaa added that the State would provide a recurring annual government grant of up to Rs 4 crore for the fund.

Participating in the valedictory function of 150th year celebrations of the Madras HC and laying the foundation stone for Sesquicentennial Commemorative building, the Chief Minister said her government had always been very sensitive to the needs of the Madras High Court.
