KOZHIKODE: The ongoing police probe into the killing of Shahid Bava, 27, by a mob at Kodiyathur in Kozhikode in an act of ‘moral policing’ in November 2011 has brought out startling revelations pointing towards a major social malady. Majority among the 15 accused in the murder case share illicit relationships with married women in the region, it has been revealed. The group had assaulted Shahid alleging that he had an affair with a married woman at Kodiyathur.‘‘The evaluation of the mobile phone call details of the accused has made it clear that many among the accused have intimate relationships with married women. They have been in regular contact with the women over phone for hours at night. ‘‘On interrogation, the accused admitted that they had intimate relationships with married women,’’ a police official told Express. However, police are of the opinion that it could not be considered as an offence unless there are complaints against the accused in this regard. ‘‘It’s basically a social issue and law-enforcement agencies can interfere only if there is a proper complaint. Hence, we have not gone into a detailed investigation of this angle,’’ he added. As of now, the Special Investigation Team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (control room) Jossy Cherian probing the case has nabbed 14 men. One accused is still absconding. The incident occurred on November 10, 2011. The group had beaten up Shahid with sticks after tying him to an electric post. Later, he died at a private hospital on November 15.
