BANGALORE: The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) reviewed the steps taken by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the promotion and safeguarding of the Kannada language in the company. The authority also examined the measures taken to give preference to local people at the time of appointment.
A team of five from the Kannada Development Authority led by chairman Mukhyamantri Chandru, met Executive Director of HAL Corporate office Sudhakar Rao and his team and asked them about the proKannada measures taken in the HAL.HAL conducted a small presentation for the team to brief them about the company, its activities and the linguistic composition of its employees. They said, out of 15,162 employees, 11,266 belong to the state. A recent advertisement placed by HAL for the recruitment of 676 employees was met with a lot of criticism as the advertisement did not specify that the posts in the C and D group will be preferably given to those who know how to read as well as write in Kannada.

Chandru said that the administrative language in Karnataka is Kannada and that all Union Government organisations have to comply by the official language policy. "Employment in the C and D division must be preferably given to those from the region", he clarified. Further, he also pointed out that according to the policy, all signboards, letterheads have to be in the trilingual form and in a specific order.
