BANGALORE: Speculating foulplay in the police lathi-charge at a seed distribution centre in Haveri on Tuesday, which left 10 injured, Agriculture Minister Umesh Katti wondered aloud: “Why do such ugly incidents take place only at Haveri - be it for fertilisers or seeds?”Addressing the media here on Tuesday, the minister said he had sought a report on the incident from the Haveri district administration and the Superintendent of Police.“The agriculture department has taken extra care to supply Kanaka Bt cotton seeds, which is much sought after. I appeal to the farmers not to scramble for seeds as many varieties of it are available,” he added.He, however, expressed regret at the police lathi-charge on the agitating farmers. “The demand for Kanaka Bt cotton seed packets is about five lakh; Mahyco, the manufacturers, have supplied only two lakh packets,” Katti said.The minister detailed that the acreage under Bt cotton in Karnataka is around 4.90 lakh hectares, of which 1.07 lakh hectares are in Haveri alone.
