Mumbai: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said that Mumbai attacker Ajmal Amir Kasab's testimony helped India nail Pakistan on 26/11. While paying tribute to the victims and heroes of the 26/11 carnage on its second anniversary in Mumbai, Chidambaram hoped that Pakistan will realise its responsibility and bring the perpetrators of the terror attack to justice.
"If Kasab had died there would have been no conclusive link to Pakistan. Today we remember martyrs of all tragedies that hit the country. While we will trust our neighbour we will verify, be on our guard and be vigilant. India wishes well all its neighbours," said Chidambaram while speaking at the martyrs' memorial at the Police Gymkhana in South Mumbai.
"I sincerely hope that on the second anniversary of this horrific tragedy, Pakistan will realise its responsibility as a nation, as a government and fulfill its promises to bring to justice those who perpetrated the attacks," said Chidambaram after attending commemoration events.
Recalling Pakistan's assurances, he said it had promised to bring to justice the masterminds, the controllers and the handlers of the terror strike by arresting all the seven persons whose names were handed over by India to it.
He said Pakistan had not even handed over the voice samples of the handlers of the 10 Pakistani terrorists who struck in Mumbai on this day two years back.
He also laid a wreath at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana, in memory of the 166 persons killed during the 60-hour long siege that took place in November 2008.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said his country was committed to bring 26/11 perpetrators to justice.
"Pakistan has condemned the Mumbai incident in the past and continues to do so today. Two years have passed since the incident and it is our wish that those who were involved in this incident should be brought to justice," said Qureshi.
The main ceremony to pay homage to 26 victims and heroes was held in Mumbai with Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar attending a police parade by the ATS at Marine Drive as part of the memorial service.
The families of many 26/11 martyrs were also present on the occasion.
The entire country has been put on high alert with additional forces being deployed in Maharashtra and Delhi.
India has already a strongly worded diplomatic note to Pakistan on Thursday expressing its disappointment with Islamabad's indifferent response in bringing the 26/11 masterminds to justice.
