The State government’s plan to help children of parents with HIV/AIDS which was started last year in 15 districts, would be extended to all district during 2012-13.
The scheme, initiated in 2011-12 by the Department of Women and Child Development with the support from the Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT), provides the children with foster care and financial assistance for education.
The KHPT official said that the children aged between 0-18 would be covered under the scheme and given an aid under the three programme: `750 per month for foster care of students; `650 per month under the sponsorship scheme and `500 annually as educational support on attaining the age of six.
“The state government had allocated a crore during last year and it has benefited 3,120 children. This year, the state government has allotted `2 crore of which `50 lakh is already disbursed so far,” said KHPT Programme Officer Srikanthe Gowda.
KHPT works towards empowering the HIV/AIDS affected community and aims to improve their health, reduce the incidence and burden of HIV and AIDS, and assert their rights.
According to the National Family Health Survey report, in Karnataka, during 2005-06, 0.69 per cent of adults aged 15-49 were infected with HIV, which roughly estimates to around 50,000 people in the state. The majority are in Belgaum, Bagalkot and Bijapur districts, in North Karnataka.
With the benefit extending to all districts, around 8,000 students are likely to benefit during the current year.
