HOSUR: A farmer was trampled to death by elephants while he was sleeping at a motor pump room on his agricultural land in a village near here on Thursday. It was around 3.30 am, when a herd of 50 elephants from the Anchetty forest strayed into the villages near Royakotta. The Forest Department officials and the public burst crackers to chase off the pachyderms back into the forest. However, the frightened elephants started running helter-skelter in Pavadaipatti village. The pachyderms reportedly charged at a motor pump room where Mookappan (62) was sleeping. The door of the room then gave away and Mookkappan was subsequently trampled. After the jumbos left the spot, Mookkappan’s neighbours rushed the grievously injured man to the government hospital in Krishnagiri. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.Madesh, son of Mookappan said, his father was the sole bread earner for the family. This is the fifth incident of an elephant killing a human in Hosur region in the past three months. The government has allotted funds to dig trenches in the villages adjoining the forest area to prevent the animals from straying into human settlements in Krishnagiri district.
