Ravi Kumar Diwakar, an Additional Sessions Judge of the Fast Track Court I, who ordered a videography survey of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi complex in 2022, claimed that he had been receiving calls from international numbers.
Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police Ghule Sushil Chandrabhan said that he had received a letter from Judge Diwakar complaining about the unknown calls.
In the letter, Judge Diwakar said that he had been getting calls from international numbers, which had caused deep concerns to him and his family following which he approached the police.
According to the judge’s testimony, he received a call from an international number on April 15 at 9.45 pm but did not answer. He further claimed that the calls have continued since then, even though he never answers them, the SSP said.
Meanwhile, the cyber cell and the Kotwali police have been directed to investigate the matter and two security personnel have been deployed to oversee the safety of his family, TOI reported.
However, one of the associates told the publication that this security arrangement is inadequate, citing a lack of weapons in possession of the security personnel, while terrorists are armed with automatic guns and modern weaponry
Following similar threat concerns by Ravi Kumar Diwakar after the Gyanvapi judgment, the Allahabad High Court at the time sanctioned Y-category security for the judge and his family. However, this security detail was later downgraded to X-category.
Last year, an agent of the Popular Front of India (PFI) was arrested from the vicinity of Ravi Kumar Diwakar’s residence in Lucknow.
Judge Diwakar is known for his strong verdicts. In Bareilly, he gave death sentences to eight people. He also initiated a suo motu action on the 2018 Bareilly riots case and summoned the alleged mastermind, cleric Tauqeer Raza to face trial.
