An army personnel, who was injured during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Saturday.
According to police, an exchange of fire between security forces and militants followed a search and cordon operation in Modergam after two to three militants were detected in the area. “An encounter has started at Modergam village of Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job…” police said.
The latest encounter comes amid the annual Amarnath Yatra, which began from the twin base camps of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district on June 29. The 52-day yatra received a fresh batch of more than 5,800 pilgrims earlier in the morning.
The encounter site is 63 km from one of the twin tracks in Pahalgam, which is the traditional and longer route taken by pilgrims paying obeisance at the Amarnath cave shrine. The central government has made elaborate security arrangements for the pilgrimage.
