Chennai: As Tamil Nadu gears up for a political face-off in one week's time, the colourful campaign trail has made for an exciting run-up.

From politics of populism to politics of sycophancy, the state's voter has seen it all. He is spoilt for choice with poll freebies like colour televisions and free rice.

But amid the humdrum of the polls, one thing that stands out is the drastic political U-turns. "When I took charge of the state it was in a fiscal abyss. We have turned the state around," Jayalalithaa said.

Fiscal turnaround is what she claims as one of her biggest achievements.

But today, she is heading to what can be considered a watershed election, where colour televisions and rice seem to be the stars.

Jayalalithaa, who initially dismmissed opposition DMK's manifesto as not feasible, later had to join the politics of promise and is now defending the freebies.

"We have promised to give the people what they need," is what she had to say.

But her campaign is not just about politics. It is also about colour and sycophancy. Her AIADMK is a party known for its unabashed display of sycophancy.

And as Jayalalitha blazes through Tamil Nadu it is time for her cadre to get into full throttle.
