Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced that ‘personal protective equipment’ with three-layer fire protection along with gum boots, helmet and breathing apparatus would be provided to 1,980 personnel working in the 302 offices of the Fire and Rescue Services Department in the State. The equipment would be procured at a cost of Rs 28 crore.
The measure is aimed at ensuring maximum safety to the firemen engaged in fire fighting and rescue operations. Each of the 302 offices would get six personal protective equipment while the offices functioning at Hogenakkal and Kothagiri would get four equipment each. Besides, 160 protective equipment would be given to station officers and superintending officers.
Considering the ever-increasing population of Chennai city and the number of multi-storey apartments as well as commercial complexes, the CM ordered purchase of a sky-lift which could be extended up to a height of 54 feet at a cost of `5.97 crore. This sky-lift would be given to the Fire and Rescue Services office at Ashok Nagar.
In case of fire accidents in multi-storeyed buildings, this equipment would help douse the fire quickly and avoid casualty and damage to the property.
