KOCHI: VR Krishna Iyer has written to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy requesting him to set up an independent physiotherapy council in the state. The former Chief Justice expressed his concern over the state of physiotherapy in the state. He said that while the science of physiotherapy has undergone radical development in the world as the therapy of ‘Drugless Diving through Healing Hands’ in Kerala it was still in its infancy. The training of physiotherapists too is exhaustive with a four-and-a-half-year graduate course. But in Kerala, many physicians employed in government hospitals are unqualified. In the absence of any council registration a number of fake physiotherapists are making the rounds in the health industry. They are a threat to public health. On the other hand, a number of qualified physiotherapists are moving to western nations owing to poor pay. This movement is having an adverse impact on the professional standards in the field. The Chief Minister must take some immediate steps to solve the issue, he said.
