CHENNAI: A day-long ‘Careers with a Purpose’ programme was held in the city recently by volunteers of Cognizant Outreach, a novel employee-led social participation programme of IT, BPO and Consulting major Cognizant. The programme saw the participation of over 6,000 school students from Class 10 to Class 12 to whom career guidance was given. The programme was held in association with Junior Achievement (JA), an international not-for-profit organisation. A team of over 220 volunteers of Cognizant Outreach conducted 150 parallel classroom sessions across 24 schools in Chennai on the day. The volunteers of Cognizant Outreach council have received special training, including an observation-based orientation session involving a live programme or a pre-recorded video. With this programme, Cognizant Outreach-JA, which has a trained volunteer base of over 900 employees, crossed the milestone of guiding over 50,000 students across Tamil Nadu, in its four-year journey. The programme, designed by JA, is aimed at bridging the gap between classroom education and vocational employability, in order to help students prepare for successful careers. The volunteers of Cognizant showcased the importance of working towards a goal, and shared real-life examples and tips. The volunteers explained the use of concepts such as SEEK (Skills, Education, Experience and Knowledge), VISTA (Values, Interests, Strengths, Talent and Attitude), and TRPA (Think, Research, Plan and Act) in choosing the right career and becoming ‘job-ready’.
