Israel-Palestine conflict ill-perceived

“The Palestinian conflict is a humanitarian issue that needs to be addressed with grave concern. However, it is sad to see that the Hindutva forces in India have perceived the Israel-Palestine conflict as a ‘Muslim issue’ ,” said senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Saturday.

He was speaking on the topic ‘Palestine and the Quest for International Justice’ at the  the conference organised by the Ernakulam district Muslim Jama’at Council here.

“Currently, the relationship with Israel has transported India from being a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, to becoming the largest importer of nuclear arms.  The current generation of IFS diplomats have also sacrificed their moral standards and view Israel’s activities keeping in mind the nation’s interests, which is a huge shame,” Aiyar said.

He reminded the audience that Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru had strongly supported the Palestinians who were forced out of their homeland.

“A lot of ramifications will be felt if Palestine  is partitioned after the partition,” Nehru had stated. India was the only non-Arab country which had voted against the partition of Palestine, Aiyar said.
