On the ongoing diplomatic tensions with Maldives, Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar recently said that it can never be guaranteed that India will be supported by all the countries, every time.
The minister was speaking at a town hall meeting in Maharashtra’s Nagpur where he also highlighted India’s extensive in the last decade in trying to build a strong global connection.
On being asked about the Maldives row, the EAM said, “Politics is politics. I cannot guarantee that in every country, every day, everybody will support us or agree with us. What we are trying to do, and with a lot of success in the last 10 years, is to build a very strong connection.”
About India’s efforts to maintain friendly diplomatic relations with other nations, Jaishankar said that the country under PM Modi’s government is focusing on fostering positive sentiments among people, despite the ups and downs in political relations.
“Politics may go up and down but the people of that nation generally have good feelings towards India and understand the importance of having good relations,” HT quoted Jaishankar as saying.
For the unversed, the diplomatic row between India and the Maldives was triggered after three Maldivian leaders made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which they criticised his recent trip to Lakshadweep Islands.
The comments soon turned into a massive political row in India leading to the suspension of all three Maldivian ministers. India also strongly condemned the comments and summoned the Maldivian envoy to register a protest.
Meanwhile, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday that no country had the right to “bully” his nation.
While addressing a press conference Muizzu, who is regarded as a pro-China leader, said without naming any country, “We may be small, but that doesn’t give you the licence to bully us.”
