Nowadays, many young indulge in cutting numerous cakes, setting off fireworks, creating large flexi banners, and other elaborate activities on their birthdays. Some have even started a new trend of giving good luck cards for such occasions.
One such birthday celebration that has garnered significant attention is Lions Club International Director G Baburao’s birthday. He celebrated his birthday in Telangana, where the event took place in the Nizamabad district centre. Contrary to the usual practice of cutting large cakes and dancing, Baburao’s birthday was celebrated by distributing food, known as Anna Daanam, throughout the district.
Members of the Lions Club visited old age homes and orphanages, providing meals to the residents as part of the birthday festivities. Lions Club President Kaleru Awan Kumar spoke to Local 18, emphasising that many negative habits, such as alcohol consumption and reckless behaviour, are associated with today’s birthday celebrations.
He urged the youth to take a proactive approach to prevent such behaviours and, instead, aim to feed ten people in need on their birthdays. For the past 15 years, the Lions Club has been organising the Annaprasadam programme on Baburao’s birthday, advocating for youth to focus on social service instead of cakes and parties. He highlighted the joy that comes from filling the stomachs of the hungry, suggesting that such actions bring true happiness.
A few years ago, twenty trucks were installed to distribute free meals to the poor. These were unveiled by the International Association of Lions Clubs’ Multiple District (MD) 320 under the ambitious Lions Free Meal on Wheels project.
The project, which involved equipping these 20 trucks with modifications, was unveiled by Animal Welfare Minister T Srinivas Yadav accompanied by R Sunil Kumar, former International Director and Gurram Srinivas Reddy, Chairman, Multi-District Council.
These trucks distributed free meals for at least 100 days in a year and can be expanded to 365 days depending on the need and public response. Each truck was expected to distribute 300 to 500 meals per day.
