KOCHI: The Kochiites love for imported cars and bikes earned the Motor Vehicles Department Rs 50 lakh as road tax last year. Over 32 imported vehicles, including bikes, hit the city roads on 2011.The most priced car that was shipped to Kochi was the Rolls Royce Ghost EWB (XZ42, RHD), KL-07- BT-3232, registered in the name of trustee of an institution. The car cost around Rs 3,04,95,000 and the tax paid was Rs 24,39,600.The second highest priced car was the Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE, KL- 07-BN-9999, owned by Jayakrishna Menon, which cost Rs 1,07,62,888 and the road tax paid was Rs 8,61,990.The third highest paid car was Mercedes Benz GL 420 CDi, KL-07-BH-7333, registered in the name of Kalyanaraman. The car cost Rs 95,75,979 and road tax paid was Rs 5,74,560.In bikes, the city saw a Harley Davidson hit the roads in 2011 but the highest paid bike was Yamaha YZF R1(Japan) for which the tax charged was Rs 75,000. The price of the bike was Rs 12,50,000.Harley Davidson 1584 cc FLTSF Fat Boy imported from US was priced at Rs 10,51,468 and the tax was Rs 63,090.Apart from this, a Porsche Cayenne, five variants of Volvo cars, six Audis, five Jaguars, two Range Rovers, three Land Rovers, three Land Cruisers and a Mercedes Benz were imported to the city.In the bike class, two Yamaha RI series bikes and a Suzuki Intruder VL 800 cc were brought to the city in 2011.But, the Road Transport officials believe that the number of imported vehicles would go down in the coming years as all international companies have started outlets in the country. The high-end bikes would hit the Indian markets soon.“We have Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover available in the market. Volvo also has opened a showroom here. The bike companies are also launching their international variants in Indian markets,” T J Thomas, Road Transport Officer said.
