Hyderabad Depressed over alleged humiliation by a headmistress over payment of fees, a 15-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping into a reservoir in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, police said on Sunday.
The body of S Samatha, who was studying in class X at a private school in Devarkonda town, was found floating in Akampalli reservoir under Gudipally police station limits this morning, they said.
Following the incident, the girl's relatives and local organisations carried her body in front of the school premises and staged a protest.
"The headmistress Sujatha reportedly asked Samatha (in front of her classmates) to make the fee payment of Rs 1,500 which was pending for quite some time. After this, the girl suddenly went missing and a complaint was lodged by her family members in this regard on Saturday, but her body was found in the reservoir this morning," a senior police officer said.
Samatha's relatives in a complaint lodged with the police, alleged that the girl, apart from being "humiliated" before her classmates, was also "harassed" over payment of fees and unable to bear the "shame", she took such an extreme step, a police officer investigating the case said.
"The girl also phoned her parents and informed them over the fee incident last evening and it seems she later jumped into the reservoir," the officer said.
An autopsy has been conducted on the girl's body and further investigations are still on.
