How to protect your child from abuse
What affect does abuse have on a child mind? What kind of terror and fear can such abuse create?

New Delhi: Children face emotional and physical abuse not just at home but also at school. This can result in low self-esteem, among other behavioural issues.

“Anything that's physical has an effect on the child's mind,” said psychiatrist Dr Achal Bhagat.

While according to experts anything from a slap to severe physical harm can be termed as physical abuse, emotional abuse can include any action or words that belittle or humiliate a child. This could also include the act of keeping a child in isolation.

“It has been seen that emotional maltreatment at times accompanies other forms of abuse,” said Dr Achal Bhagat.

So, what are the signs that one must watch out for? “Any change of behaviour from the normal routine, be it avoiding going to a relatives place, not playing Holi this time or sulking more than normal,” said Dr Bhagat.

If a child is facing abuse, chances are he won't tell you, but as a parent, it’s important to keep communication lines open and keep track of what's going on.

Statistics show that by the time they reach adulthood, it might be too late.

What's your reaction?
