Kerala is full of temples. Each premise has its origin stories, which are often propagated by our grandparents during storytelling sessions. One of the stories around the birth of Medayil Subrahmanyaswamy Temple in Parippally village of Kollam district highlights the strong will of one man. This temple in Paripally has become a perfect example of a man’s unwavering devotion. Medayil Subrahmanyaswamy Temple symbolises the unwavering faith and undying love of a Muruga devotee named Medayil Kochu Cherukan Vaidyan. Medayil Kochu was a doctor who was a regular visitor to Palani. But he was unable to visit the temple in his old age. So he decided to build a temple of Murugan in his hometown. With the blessings of Sree Narayanaguru, he brought the Muruka idol from Palani to Parippally. He built the temple around it. Today, this temple witnesses hundreds of visitors daily.
Agni Kavadi, Parava Kavadi and Shoolam Kuth are important offerings on festival days. The Murugan devotees leap over the burning woods to showcase their devotion to the lord. Others make offerings as per their needs and resources. This temple in Parippally is one of the main Subrahmanyaswamy temples of the Kollam district. Devotees take this temple as a lesson of strong will and devotion.
Similarly, there is a Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Haripad, Kerala, in which the idol of the god was believed to have been discovered in the backwaters of Kandanalloor. It is said that all the landlords of Haripad simultaneously had visions of the idol, leading them to find it in Kayamkulam Lake. The idol was brought ashore at Nelpurakadavu. To commemorate its retrieval, the Vigraha Labdhi Jalolsavam festival is conducted in the Payippad River for three days after Thiruvonam. It is believed that lord Vishnu appeared as a saint to consecrate the temple which led to the name of the palace as Haripad.
