Vijit Singh, the step grandson of Rajmata Gayatri Devi ran his car over 6 women

Jaipur: Pressure is mounting on the city police to take strict action against Vijit Singh, the step grandson of Rajmata Gayatri Devi.

Vijit is accused of ramming his car into a group of girls on December 16. One of them, first year MBA student Babita was killed, while four of her friends were injured. Babita's distraught family is now demanding justice.

“My daughter mattered to me as much as Rajmata’s children mattered to her. Just because he (Vijit) is a royal he shouldn’t be spared,” she says.

Babita's classmates and friends too are out on the streets. Though a medical report had confirmed he was drunk at the time of the incident, police initially booked Vijit only for negligent driving and let him out on bail.

But with pressure mounting, they have now slapped three non-bailable charges on him including culpable homicide. But Vijit's influential family is standing firmly behind him.

"I feel very sorry for the boy coz he didn't do it on purpose. Why should it bring a bad name to the family? It can happen anywhere,” says Gayatri Devi.

Vijit Singh has kept away from media glare since the incident. He has been asked to appear before a local court on January 2. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has now directed the police not to show any leniency.
