Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh): With rivers in Himachal Pradesh flowing above the danger mark due to incessant rains, the worried general public is anticipating floods and related problems.
"People in the region are worried and we are anticipating floods just like last year. Heavy rains are adding to the worry. We want that the government should shift people living on the banks of the River Satluj to higher and safer lands," Harish Chandra, a local, said.
Authorities in the state say that they are prepared to handle the floods.
"We have been facing this problem almost every year. So, this time we are more adapted to face the situation. We have to keep a control on river Sutlej,", Power Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Vidya Stokes said.
The Border Road Organisation (BRO) has already started constructing alternative roads to facilitate smooth movement of people and goods.
Kinnaur, which borders China, faces the threat of floods due to the artificially created Pareechu Lake in China.
Last year, the floods washed away a number of houses and bridges, besides leaving several others in a damaged state.
The monsoons, though crucial to agriculture, also prove to be a bane as downpour often causes floods in western, eastern and northern plains.
