New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked Delhi Police to file an additional status report in the Sunanda Pushkar murder case to explain the delays in investigation.
The matter was listed for hearing in the High court on Tuesday after the BJP leader Subramanian Swamy challenged the status report filed by Delhi Police.
According to Swamy’s application, the status report submitted by the police in the High Court was ‘vague and convoluted’. He also questioned why the chargesheet couldn’t be filed even after three-and-a-half years of the case.
The court has also sought a reply from Swamy on the plea filed by Pushkar’s son Shiv Menon challenging his intervention in the case. The court also sought reply from Delhi Police on the progress in the case and if the case should be court-monitored and transferred to the CBI.
The court first pulled up Delhi police when it got to know that the initial status report was filed by the investigating officer and not by the counsel.
A bench of Justice GS Sistani and Justice Chander Shekhar pointed out that the status report says the collection of evidence took place in 2015. They said that it is now 2017 so why has it taken two years for the Delhi Police to get the final report. If it took two years to Delhi Police, there has to be some reason.
High Court also asked Menon’s counsel about the delay. Apart from asking the copy of the PIL filed by Swamy, the counsel also said they have not authorized anyone to be party in this. They requested for a time-bound investigation.
Menon’s counsel also accused Swamy of seeking publicity. What Swamy is doing is not Public Interested Litigation but Publicity Interest Litigation. He also said that he could demonstrate that the purpose was to sensationalize. He also cited how the PIL was leaked into media much before submitting it in the court.
Swamy, however, said that the purpose of PIL was to highlight the shoddy investigation by Delhi Police.
“I don’t need publicity. I am a multi-dimensional politician. I go to parliament where I am surrounded by media. I am not devoid of publicity,” Swamy replied to Menon’s counsel. He also questioned Menon’s motives.
