SIVAGANGA: Union Minister P Chidambaram alleged that there is some hidden motive behind the ongoing anti-nuclear plant protest in Koodankulam. Chidambaram was addressing Congress workers during a party meeting at Devakottai in Sivaganga district on Sunday.“Despite the repeated assurances of the government that Koodankulam nuclear power plant is safe, there are protests going on and it is with some hidden motive”, the Union Minister said while talking about the protests at Idinthakarai.He urged the state government to take steps to put to an end the power crisis. “I asked former chief minister M Karunanidhi to find a way to end the power crisis when DMK was ruling the State. Now I make the same request to the new government”, he said.Defending the Congress party in Sri Lankan war crime issue, Chidambaram said, “for more than 30 years, we have been maintaining a good relation with our neighbouring countries. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna submitted two reports in Parliament on the resolution the United States moved against Sri Lanka for war crimes. Then, the Prime Minister came forward to back the resolution and then after putting much thoughts, India voted for the resolution”, Chidambaram said.Meanwhile, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Shanimol Usman said in Nagercoil on Sunday that the Koodankulam nuclear power plant is the only viable solution to the present electricity shortage in Tamil Nadu. She said that experts like former President APJ Abdul Kalam and MR Sreenivasan have already inspected the plant and vouched for its safety.
