KASARGOD: The heavy rains which lashed for the past few days flooded the low-lying areas in several places in the district on Sunday. The rivers flowing down stream from the border areas of Karnataka caused flash floods in the coastal belts. The remote villages in the eastern hill areas have been isolated with the people afraid to cross the rivers through the hanging bridges.The platform of the Kumbla Railway Station was flooded on Sunday as the rain water overflowed the railway station road. As the drainage system near the railway station remained clogged with filth, the rain water inundated the railway station premises.In Hosdurg taluk, there was extensive loss of crops in Panathady, Kodom-Belur and Panathur areas. Power distribution was affected as trees fell on power lines.Power outage has become acute in the town areas with trees falling on power lines. A flex board erected on the terrace of a building fell on electric lines on Saturday disrupting power distribution for hours.The giant eye catcher flex boards in the town posed threat to the safety of the pedestrians and vehicles. The flex boards collapsed in the wind as the iron supports of  boards were not rooted firmly atop the terrace of  buildings.Meanwhile, death due to monsoon calamities in the district rose to seven with one more death reported on Saturday. Crop loss was reported on 1.5 acres of land and total loss on crop destruction is Rs 1.25 crore. The loss of standing crops was reported on as many as 481 acres of land. A total of 23 houses collapsed in the monsoon rains so far.
