KOCHI: A petition has been filed before the Kerala High Court seeking a directive to postpone the death sentence of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The petitioner also seeks an order to abolish capital punishment.The petitioner, advocate Manju Antony, submitted that death sentence should be abolished in India by introducing suitable amendment in the Indian Penal Code. The petitioner submitted that many countries have abolished the death sentence for all offences.“As per the statistics available 95 countries abolished capital punishment for all offences and eight countries have abolished it except under special circumstances,” the petitioner states. “Forty-one countries have not used the death sentence for the last 10 years. The United Nations in 2007 had passed a non-binding resolution asking its member countries for a moratorium on execution with a view to abolishing the death penalty,” petitioner states.
