Gujarat is bracing for cyclone Nilofar which has developed in the Arabian Sea. The Met department says it has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm due to which there will be heavy rainfall in coastal Saurashtra and Kutch on October 30 and 31.
The Met department has said that the very severe cyclonic storm, 'Nilofar' over westcentral Arabian Sea has moved further slightly northwards and lay centered about 1155 km southwest of Naliya (Gujarat), 1210 km south-southwest of Karachi (Pakistan) and 870 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman).
MET has predicted that the cyclone would move initially north-northwestwards during next 24 hrs and then recurve northeastwards and cross north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast around Naliya by October 31 morning.
However, it is expected that as the system would come closer to Gujarat coast, it would weaken and cross the coast as a severe cyclonic storm.
Under the influence of the system, rainfall has been predicted at most places. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely to commence along coastal districts of Saurashtra and Kutch from October 30 morning.
MET has said that its intensity would increase gradually with heavy to very heavy fall at a few places from October 30 night. Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would commence along and off Gujarat coast from October 30 morning and would become 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph at the time of landfall.
Sea condition along and off Gujarat coast will be rough to very rough from October 30 morning and would become very high from the afternoon.
District authorities in the coastal areas are monitoring the situation and have been advised to keep their control rooms operational.
