Goa building collapse: Toll mounts to 21, contractor's bail plea rejected

Panaji: The death toll in Goa building collapse has risen to 21. The under-construction building in Chawdi area of Canacona collapsed last Saturday. The rescue operations were stalled for two days when the adjacent buildings started tilting. However, they have been resumed now.

Meanwhile, the contractor Vishwas Desai 's anticipatory bail plea has been rejected by a Margao court. Police sources say the contractor used poor quality material to construct the building.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday admitted that the building collapse in Canacona could have been avoided if the town planner had been alert and careful.
