HYDERABAD: For at least some property tax collectors of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, technology is set to put a stop to their financial manipulations. With the Corporation coming to know that a few bill collectors were not depositing the collected amount on the same day and were even using the money to lend on interest, GHMC has decided to replace manual collection with the use of hand-held computers. From next month onwards, bill collectors in all 18 circles of GHMC would be making their rounds armed with the new device, which officials feel would make the system more transparent. In the manual system, bill collectors collected the tax directly from house owners and issued manual bills to them. But they sometimes fudged the records and took a few days or weeks to deposit the money in treasury. But the hand-held computer will generate a payment receipt immediately and will also transmit the data to the respective zonal offices and the GHMC head office. In this way, higher authorities can keep track of the collection made daily by the bill collector. The household data in each locality will also be fed into the machines by the GHMC finance wing. The Corporation has started implementing the system on a pilot basis in Patancheru circle last week. It will be implemented in other circles in 15 to 20 days. GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu handed over the equipment to some bill collectors for test trials in the circle.
