Gavaskar bats for Tests in his last innings for ICC
Gavaskar quit as ICC's Cricket Committee chairman on Thursday.

New Delhi: The tussle between Sunil Gavaskar and the International Cricket Council (ICC) has come to an end. On Thursday, Gavaskar quit as chairman of the ICC's Cricket Committee and is now free to fulfill his media commitments..

"I emphasised again that while there should be a balance between all the formats of the game, the 50-over game as well as the new format of the game, the Twenty20, Test cricket should not be neglected. I think that was very crucial and I think that came to the fore in this meeting as well," Gavaskar said after a two-day meeting in Dubai.

And it was Gavaskar's last comment as chairman of the ICC's Cricket Committee.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the eight years I have held the role and it has been extremely fulfilling to be able to give back to the game. However, with more and more cricket being played it has become clear that it is not possible for me to do justice to both the chairmanship of the ICC Cricket Committee and my media commitments," he said after his resignation.

While the ICC complimented Gavaskar for his contribution; they will be pleased that he has gone on his own.

Strong voices including the incoming ICC chief David Morgan and Malcolm Speed, who till recently was CEO of the ICC, had asked for Gavaskar to choose between being a commentator or continuing as Cricket Committee chairman.

The battle lines were drawn when Gavaskar openly criticised ICC match referee Mike Proctor and umpire Mark Benson during the controversial Sydney Test earlier this year.

He had also lashed out at the English and Australian cricket boards, causing much heartburn in ICC circles.

Clearly finding someone to fill the big shoes of Gavaskar at the helm won't be an easy task for the ICC.
