The fountain at the new heritage park on the premises of the Vellore Collectorate came to life on Tuesday.
The fountain would have been lost to oblivion had not a news item, ‘Newly-built park cries for attention’, highlighting the pathetic condition of the park that was created at a cost of `40 lakhs under Self Sufficiency Scheme, been published in this newspaper on October 6.The park was inaugurated on August 15 by the then Collector Ajay Yadav.
However, the `9-lakh fountain, with modernised cascade motors and multi-straight jets attached with LED lights, had a short life and went out of operation within a week. The 14,000 ornamental and foliage plants aimed at attracting enthusiasts achieved only in providing fodder to stray cattle that ambled in during the night. Non-payment of electricity bills led to disconnection of power supply by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation in mid-September, the fountain has a separate power connection for itself, and it seemed as if all was lost and this too would turn into a monument haunted by its own past. But, the news item expedited the matters providing a new lease of life to the fountain, which became operational on Tuesday.
The beauty of the park had initially attracted the local residents. The officials issued directions to close the main gate during night hours to prevent stray cattle from entering and grazing.
