HYDERABAD: ‘’India is the fastest growing economy. We stand fourth, after USA, China and Japan and have the potential to soon step into the third place. We are embracing a knowledge-driven economy and many pioneers have made their contributions to this effect. We need more such passionate contributions of wisdom and sustained work and universities would play a pivotal role to achieve this, Dr Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission has said.Addressing the 13th convocation of the University of Hyderabad, he encouraged students and the faculty to push the frontiers of knowledge through research work. He felt that good quality education will prepare youngsters to cope with the changing scenario in the country. ‘’If we are able to provide good quality education to all, the future holds a great potential or else, we risk serious threats to the progress of the country,’’ he said and urged for serious action in this regard. Also, higher education and research have a special role in sustaining competitive edge, Kakodkar said. Speaking about strengthening the quality of research, he said universities should have the presence of industry research on campus through research parks and coordination with national laboratories. Students must also be exposed to various social activities to give them a sense of binding with India in its true sense, he said. The university has awarded degrees to 2,110 students including 160 PhDs, 220 MPhils, 239 MTechs and 29 PG diploma degrees in total. The university vice-chancellor professor Ramakrishna Ramaswamy announced that the university has given nearly 1,700 PhDs and has produced 20,000 graduates till now.
