Bird Idol is an animation film which cutely shows birds living a life the human way. Didn't get it? Imagine watching a Hindi film where the boy elopes with a girl from a different caste. They manage to live a successful life and raise kids until one fine day the girl's parents find out their whereabouts.
Bird Idol is similar to such clichéd Hindi movies with twittering birds that go through a similar journey. So these two lovers run away from the bird kingdom, as it would have been impossible for them to stay together in a community that doesn't permit such relationships.
So they take a long flight to the city Mumbai, buy a tree house there and agree to give 50 worms as rent to the estate agent. So, their house has a big mobile phone where the screen substitutes as a TV screen and they wash plates with the dew drops. Innovative it is but acceptable in an animation flick.
Hummi is their only child and has been kept in the dark about his parents' love story but has his own. Hummi is the most happening guy in the college, loved by all but is not a snob. Surily, his classmate, secretly admires him and longs for him. The hero never gets the hint until one incident which makes them fall in love.
In the later part of the film, Hummi discovers the rock star within himself. Not following the tradition of his community, he composes music the human way. He manages to set up a band and his love interest, Surily, also agrees to be a part of it and creates magic on stage with her feathers.
The band participates in a singing competition and tries to write new chapter by entertaining audiences through their innovative music. They immediately see success and the band is on headlines across all news channels. Until one fine day, when an incident changes their whole life.
Parents who complain that there aren't sufficient films made for kids, Bird Idol might just be their answer. However, perhaps even the new generation kids will find the film a bore.
Songs are the USP of the film and names like Shaan, Neeraj Shridhar and Kailash Kher have lent their voice. The music is composed by Sangeet and Siddharth Haldipur and is soothing to the ears. Even Juhi Chawla has done a stint with singing.
As an Indian animated film, Bird Idol is definitely an honest attempt. But as Indian theatres are flooded with quality Hollywood animation films, this film will fail to grab any attention. However, no compromises are made and it tries to match up to the Hollywood style. Apparently, in spite of being projected as a laugh riot of a film, there is not a single scene which makes you laugh. You are just watching the film because you happen to be there.
Verdict: If there are no Hollywood animated movies for the offering, give your kids a different treat, this summer vacation.
