Bengaluru: With tension heating up between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Mekedatu balancing reservoir cum drinking water project, MPs from Karnataka have decided to stage a protest in Delhi on December 27. The move was announced by Karnataka Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar after a meeting with state MPs in Delhi on Thursday.
"This project is our right but Tamil Nadu has been opposing it. We are ready to hold talks with them on this," DK Shivakumar said after meeting all party MPs from the state.
Despite strong resistance from Tamil Nadu, which has been alleging that the project would affect its share of Cauvery water, the Central Water Commission gave Karnataka the nod for pre-feasibility report of the project and a go-ahead with a detailed report.
Tamil Nadu had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month and also moved a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Central Water Commission, Karnataka water resources minister DK Shivakumar, among others.
In response, Shivakumar wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy and requested an appointment to discuss the state matter. Meanwhile, a special session of the Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution against the project.
