CHENNAI: Empowering Women in IT (eWIT), a voluntary, non-profit women’s forum, celebrated its sixth anniversary recently. The event, which saw the participation of more than 250 IT professionals from across the city, hosted a discussion on the theme ‘Women in Leadership Roles -- Are We There Yet?’ A panel that included Nirmala Gopalakrishnan, Head - Training Operations and Process Consulting, Hexaware Technologies, and Srimathi Shivashankar, AVP - Diversity and Sustainability, HCL Technologies, discussed the availability of opportunities for women to assume roles of leadership. They also delibrated on the role of corporate organisations, mentors and families in ensuring gender equity at the workplace.  Speaking on the occasion, Kalyani Narayanan, president eWIT, said, “eWIT is the only forum that actively and constantly works towards creating an ecosystem where women serving the IT/ITES industries can succeed. More companies have begun to recognise our value and seek our help on various aspects related to creating a gender-just work place.”In the past year this forum released a report titled ‘Role of Stakeholders in Increasing the Share and Sustainability of Women from Tier-2, Tier-3 Cities and Rural Areas in IT/ITES.’  It has also organised knowledge sharing events, networking events and gender inclusivity events.As a part of the event, eWIT conducted a paper presentation contest for IT/ITES women professionals to showcase their talent and expertise in their respective areas. Candidates from various organisations and colleges presented their papers in four categories – Technology, Human Resource, Quality and Student.
