BANGALORE: In a rare surgery, doctors of a private hospital treated a thirty-one-year-old woman who had developed a fleshy mass growing out from her right ear. The woman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, had developed a large tumour which had damaged a portion of the skull. She had swelling in front of ear for almost two years. However, it started increasing in size recently. She visited another centre in city where FNAC was done which showed tumour cells-giant cell tumour. She was advised surgery. When she deferred surgery, the swelling increased in size over the months. She also had developed impaired hearing in right ear since a few months. According to Dr Srinivas, Neurosurgeon at Yashomati Hospitals, her brain MRI showed a destructive tumour involving the right side of skull base with eroded bone and tumour even entering the brain. The CT showed the extent of bone destruction- right temporal bone, middle ear cavity. Audiometry showed severe hearing loss. According to the doctors, after surgery she is recovering and will be discharged in a few days.
