THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dhanak, the annual cultural fiesta of students of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), came alive with a splendid and colourful inaugural ceremony on the campus at Valiamala on Friday.The fest was formally rolled into motion by renowned singer Dr K J Yesudas in the presence of chief guest Soorya Krishnamoorthy. The formal ceremony was followed by ‘Kalaripayattu’ performance and street dance by a professional group.The much-awaited cultural competitions followed. While the group dance teams set the stage on fire, duet singing competition added to the grace of the event. Gully cricket and street football competitions, which went late into the night, bringing out the enthusiasm and bubbling energy of the young brigade.The second day of the fest witnessed many events on Saturday, which emerged as a real feast to the literary minds of the city, such as talespin (impromptu story telling), JAM (just a minute) and debate.The magic tricks workshop, conducted by the Muthukad Magic Academy gave a firsthand experience in various magic tricks which mesmerised people over centuries. The mime which followed simply proved that silence can be as loud as thunder.The major event of the day was the band competition named ‘Lord of the Strings’ which made the whole campus vibrating with an unmatched verve and splash. The event will conclude on Monday.
