New Delhi: Amid the row over the demolition of a slum cluster, the Delhi High Court has sent a notice to state government, police and Railways asking for information on the demolition procedure followed.
The high court has asked for a reply by December 16, 2015.
Railways on Saturday removed about 1200 slum dwellings and about 15 shops at Shakurbasti station after giving third notice to vacate before December 12, 2015.
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the Shakur Basti incident after a 6-month-old child died allegedly during the drive.
However, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in Lok Sabha said that the death of a child at the demolition site had nothing to do with the razing of the slum units as it had occurred two hours before railways started clearing the encroachments at Shakur Basti with the help of police.
"As per report from Northern Railway, the child alleged to have died during the encroachment removal drive, had expired much before the encroachment removal had commenced, as confirmed from Delhi Police records," Prabhu said.
Describing the encroachment on rail land as "safety hazards", the minister said "These encroachments have become source of impediment in development of new passenger terminal and other infrastructural facilities at Shakurbasti."
While the Delhi government and Centre continue to spar over the incident, the ousted slum dwellers are the ones who are suffering.
