CHENNAI: A 37-year-old man murdered his wife and two-year-old child and then hung himself in Red Hills on Sunday night. Police suspect that mounting debts would have probably led him to take this extreme step.According to police, Babu (37), a native of Tiruvalla in Kerala, came to the city a decade ago and worked as a welder. He and his wife Sheela (27) had a two-year-old daughter Athira.Sheela’s parents Sadanandan and Girija resided at Pugazhendi Nagar in Mogappair. Initially, Babu and his family lived with them because the welder worked on a contract basis, returning home only after 20 days. Nine months ago, he and his family moved to a rented house in Vikravandi Street in Red Hills. After Pongal, Babu left to Tuticorin and returned only last week.On Monday morning, the couple were not seen outside. Since Sheela habitually called her parents every morning, they awaited anxiously for her call. When the call never came, Girija requested her daughter’s neighbours to check on her daughter. When they looked into the house through the window, they saw Babu’s body hanging from the ceiling fan and inside they found Sheela and Athira lying dead on the bed. During the investigation, police found that Babu had strangulated Sheela and Athira using a nylon rope and then hung himself. “We suspect that he must have taken the extreme step driven by debts,” a police officer said.
