MYSORE: The district administration gave a traditional send-off to the 13 pachyderms that participated in the Dasara festivities, by feeding them jaggery, sugarcane, coconut and banana in the presence of District Incharge Minister S A Ramadas. The first batch of Balarama, Abhimanyu, Mary, Gajendra, Arjuna and Sarala and others had come to the city in August. Before boarding them in trucks, a priest performed pooja to each elephant. Rs. 5,000 was distributed to each of the 40 mahout and Kavadi families, along with dress material. Ramadas said that Arjuna will be replaced by Balarama to carry the Golden Howdah for the festivities next year. “When we consider the age of Balarama, we have to go for another elephant. Veterinary doctors and forest officials have also suggested Arjuna as the right choice,” he said.
