Cyclone moves towards Chennai, AP
Cyclone Warning Centre says the storm is going to move towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next 48 hours.

Visakhapatnam: More bad weather is being predicted by the Meteorological Department in Tamil Nadu.

The depression South East of the Bay of Bengal, which has turned into a cyclonic storm, 700 km away from the north Tamil Nadu coast, is expected to hit north Tamil Nadu and some parts of south Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday night.

Heavy rains lashed 22 districts all of last week, taking with it more than 280 lives.

The rain had barely subsided and the relief work just begun when the cyclone has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

The storm, which is centered at about 800 km east of southeast Chennai, has as of Tuesday morning started moving northwards at a speed of 65 kmph.

Strong winds from Northeastern direction with speeds reaching 45-50 kmph are likely to continue along and off south coastal Andhra Pradesh. The wind speed is likely to increase to 50-60 km from Wednesday.

The Cyclone Warning Centre in Vishakapatnam issued a statement saying that the storm is likely to intensify and move towards North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coast during the next 48 hours.

Director Meteorological Department, S R Ramanan, says, "The storm will intensify as it moves northwards. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in some parts of the state."

Thundershowers are likely to occur from Wednesday over many places in north coastal Tamil Nadu and the Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna districts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The Cyclone Warning Centre said that the sea would become very rough along the south coast from Wednesday onwards.

A cautionary signal has been hoisted at Krishnapatnam and Machlipatnam ports and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea during the next 48 hours.
