Jammu: Curfew was clamped Saturday morning in a town in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district following clashes between members of the Hindu and Muslim communities over a piece of land.

Police had to use teargas shells to disperse the clashing groups in the border town of Mendhar, around 200 km from here.

The curfew would continue on residents of Mendhar until tensions could be eased by bringing members of the two communities together to resolve the issue, a district official said.

A section of Hindus were protesting against the alleged forcible occupation of their land by a section Muslims. The latter claimed that the land was theirs.
