A group of writers and cultural activists have come out against the CPM unleashing violence in the wake of the arrest of CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan in the Shukkoor murder case.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, writers Anand, Zacharia, B R P Bhaskar, M G S Narayanan, C R Parameswaran, Sarah Joseph, K Venu, M Gangadharan, N M Pierson, T P Rajeevan, M N Karasseri, Hameed  Chendamangalloor, K P Kumaran and P M Manuel said that a democratic society could not allow such violence. The evidence available with the Police says that the conspiracy to kill Shukkoor was hatched in the presence of P Jayarajan and T V Rajesh MLA. The police charged the case against Jayarajan on the basis of the evidence that Jayarajan was aware of the conspiracy to murder Shukkoor and he had not even tried to stopped it. As the case has been filed, it was the court to decide on the merit of the case.

Everybody has the right to question and criticise the character of such cases. But in a democracy, it was not expected on the part of a Political party such as the CPM which reiterates that they would honour rule of law and continue to participate in the electoral process. the government should not shy away from initiating strict action against those who have unleashed violence.

The Election commission also should seriously consider disallowing those political parties which do not honour rule of law from contesting the elections.  To call for a state-wide hartal to paralyse life in the name of arresting an accused in a murder case is an anti-people activity, they said.

What's your reaction?
