CHENNAI: For 60 million diabetic people in India, there are only 6000 diabetologists. Going by the figures in hand, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) has shouldered a huge responsibility in creating the necessary manpower to handle this challenge.Speaking at the convocation of DMDEA’s fellowship and certificate courses, Dr M V Mohan, president of DMDEA, said there was a huge dearth of medical and para-medical professionals to deal with the challenge of diabetes. Therefore, the academy, founded with the vision of training such professionals, will focus on a multi-disciplinary approach. Dr N Rangabashyam, emeritus professor, The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, who delivered the convocation address, appreciated the academy’s contribution in research and its commitment in creating awareness on diabetes. He also had a word of advice for the young professionals, “We need to constantly upgrade our knowledge to keep ourselves well versed with all the latest advances and in other specialties.”Earlier, certificates were awarded to 22 doctors who have completed the two-year Fellowship in Diabetology Course(F.DIAB) and also to six diabetes educators who have completed the Post Graduate Certified Diabetes Educators Course( PGCDE). Fourteen doctors, who have completed the one-year Certificate Course in Evidence Based Diabetes, which was conducted in collaboration with Public Health Foundation of India( PHFI), also received the certificates.DMDEA also offers several other courses: fellowships in Eye Diseases of Diabetes, PG Dip in Diabetic Education, Dip in Nursing Aide, Diploma in Podiatry, BSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and Certificate Courses in Physician Assistantship, Diabetes Technologies, Evidence based Diabetes Management. Several courses offered by DMDEA are affiliated to the Dr MGR Medical University.
