KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation Council has decided to request the state for a vigilance inquiry into the alleged anomalies in the construction of the Brahmapuram Solid Waste Treatment Plant.
The decision in this regard was taken at the special council meeting held here on Wednesday amidst protests raised by opposition members who later staged a walkout from the council hall.Apart from the decision to request a vigilance probe, the council passed an agenda which contain steps to bring in an effective plan to solve the issues related with the Solid Waste Management in the city.
"A majority of the members of the council believes that there were serious lapses occurred at the time of the construction of the plant at Brahmapuram. Hence, it is the decision of the council to request the government to order a probe into the anomalies, if any, in the construction of the Rs 19 crore plant," said Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany.The preparation of the estimate for the immediate renovation work of the existing plant will be entrusted with an accredited agency. The renovation works will be carried out by a government agency as a deposit work. The meeting also decided to build a compound wall, roads and canals with the financial aid from Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP). Separate tenders will be floated for installing proper water supply system in the plant."The move is purely politically motivated," said K J Jacob. Health standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf, members including N Venugopal, M Anilkumar, K V Manoj, Premkumar, Syamala S Prabhu and N A Shafeek also participated in the discussions.
