KOCHI: To prevent the illegal dumping of waste in public places, the Corporation will soon launch a special health squad. The squad will be divided into four units consisting of officials from the health department of the Corporation. Announcing the plan to set up the units at the launch of the pre-monsoon cleaning programme ‘Mazhayethum Munpe’, Mayor Tony Chammany said that the primary objective of the health squad is to make sure that the waste treatment methods are strictly followed by the public. “Each unit will have four members and it will be provided with a vehicle. This will ensure that the mobile units can reach every nook and cranny of the city. Those who do not follow the norms set up for the scientific treatment of waste will be fined,” Chammany said. The Mayor also requested Excise Minister K Babu, who inaugurated the programme, to consider the Corporation’s demand for vehicles for the squad. Earlier, in his inaugural address, Babu said that the govt would give subsidy to households for setting up waste treatment units on their premises as part of the decentralised waste management system.  “Solid waste treatment units and plants incorporating modern technologies would be set up in Kochi, Kozhikode and T’Puram,” he said. ‘Mazhayethum Munpe’, launched as part of the Suchitwa Mission project of the state government aims at preventing the outbreak of monsoon-related diseases.
