The state Congress unit has urged Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to convene a special session of the Legislature and pass a unanimous resolution asserting the rights of the state over the Cauvery waters.
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had supported the state government’s stand on releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. KPCC president G Parameshwar told reporters here, “We have already demonstrated our views both at the all-party leaders meetings convened by Shettar and outside.”
Stating that a resolution passed unanimously at the state legislature would help assert the stand taken by the government on the issue, he said, “When the state itself is reeling under severe drought, how can it release water to other states.” He also announced that during Wednesday’s KPCC general body meeting a resolution reiterating the party’s stand on the issue would be passed.
The people of the state were always given a raw deal when it came to allocation of Cauvery waters, including by the tribunals, the Congress leader said. “In the absence of any distress sharing formula, it is very difficult to oblige the order by any authorities,” he said.
Referring to the controversy over a letter sent to KPCC treasurer Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Parameshwar said, “It is not a notice seeking explanation from him. I have high regards for Shivashankarappa, and if at all the letter had hurt him I would tender an apology.”
