CUTTACK: The Odisha High Court on Monday granted the State Government six weeks to free the campus of VSS Medical College and Hospital (VSSMCH), Burla, of encroachments and unauthorised occupants. The Government in an affidavit filed on Monday had sought three more months to complete the eviction drive. The division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopalagowda and Justice BN Mohapatra also directed the Government to inform on the steps taken to regularise the sine die period of more than a fortnight in September following the strike by junior doctors and medicos over alleged attack on them and other issues of campus security and development. The bench had last month sought information on the steps taken towards fulfilment of the promises and assurances on removing encroachment and provisioning of adequate security. The State Government on Monday filed an affidavit and stated before the court that the eviction drive had been initiated and pursuant to such action 15 encroachers vacated the premises after notice and 56 encroachers have been evicted. Indicating the steps taken, Advocate General Ashok Mohanty sought three more months for completion of the task. Two PILs have been filed in connection with the strike. One by advocate Gadadhar Sahoo seeking appropriate directions on the issue of striking doctors demanding security while the other by the students of VSS MCH seeking directions with regard to their smooth functioning within the hospital premises. The PG students have pressed for regularisation of their services during the strike and sine die period as committed by the Government. The Government had assured of taking a favourable stance on regularisation of the duty of the medicos covering the entire period of agitation at the meeting between Health Minister Prasanna Acharya and the Joint Action Committee of the students, following which the agitation was withdrawn on September 25.
