Temperatures in many parts of north India have been abnormally low as compared to previous years due to cold wave conditions.

Lucknow: The cold wave sweeping across north India has intensified, claiming more lives with each passing day.

At least 36 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh, due to cold wave conditions over the past week.

Temperatures in many parts of north India have been abnormally low as compared to previous years, with Srinagar recording a low of minus 5.2 degrees.

With a minimum that's been four degrees below normal, Punjab?s capital Chandigarh settled at 3.4 degree Celsius, while Jalandhar recorded plunged to sub zero of minus 0.4 degree Celsius, making it the coldest city in the plains.

Many were left with no alternative but to huddle around fire for some respite from the chill.

"It's very cold this time, We never expected the weather to be this cold in December. I think it will get colder with time," Rajpal, a local resident, said.

The Met Department has attributed the harsh weather to the cold winds blowing from the Himalayan region.

"The wind pattern this time is changed. The winds coming from the colder regions and the Himalayan reaches are bone-chilling and dry and have brought down the temperatures not only in Lucknow but in the entire Uttar Pradesh," R K Verma, Director, Meteorological Department, Lucknow said.

Cold winds from northwestern Rajasthan have also lowered temperature in New Delhi.

The Met department however said that things will settle down soon and temperatures will be back to normal.
